Information
- Description
- Dom Brial is a 100 year-old co-operative representing 200 growers and 1,700 ha (4,200), of which more than 250 ha are certified organic, located in the amphitheatre of Roussillon, shaped by three mountain ranges and facing the Mediterranean Sea, is France’s sunniest region, averaging 316 sunlit days a year. It’s also the driest, often seeing just 500 mm (20 in) of rain in a year, and one of the windiest, thanks in the main to the powerful north wind they call the tramontane. You can count on value for money when it comes to Dom Brial wines Dom is not short for Domaine – the cooperative is named after the Dominican priest who arranged for a perpetual annuity to fund a school for the poorest children in the communes of Baixas and Pia in Roussillon. They have been pretty pioneering, not just in the region but in France as a whole – they were the first producer in France to get an optical sorting machine, the first to make fortified Muscat, and were one of the first five stakeholders in the viticulture sector to sign up to and be certified by the Vignerons Engagés en Développement Durable (Growers in Sustainable Development) initiative. Their head winemaker and director of production is also a woman – Agnès Arquier. She leads a team who doesn’t just make large-volume supermarket wine but are playing around with micro-vinifications, concrete eggs and amphorae. You can count on value for money when it comes to Dom Brial wines but if you want to taste their best wines, you’ll need to wait for our report on their VDNs. Dom Brial was awarded "Best Co-operative in France" by the Berliner Wein Trophy 4 years in a raw from 2019 to 2022.
